Chris

Position: Branch Youth Officer

Bio:
I have worked in the private care sector for over four years as a care assistant in a nursing home setting. I became active in GMB to ensure that workers in this already challenging field feel protected, respected, and heard. As a Shop Steward and Health & Safety Representative, I advocate for safer working environments, stronger rights, and better terms and conditions for all care staff. As the Youth Officer for our branch, I am passionate about ensuring the voices of young workers are not only heard but truly valued. I believe that for our union to remain strong and relevant, it must evolve to meet the needs of the next generation of trade unionists. As one of the LGBT+ Strand Leads for GMB Scotland, and as a neurodivergent person myself, equality is at the heart of everything I do. I’m committed to building a union that reflects and respects the diversity of its members, and where everyone can thrive with dignity and fairness. GMB is a powerful force for change, and I’m proud to be part of shaping its future within the private care sector

Bio:
In 2007, my workplace underwent a transformation when it was acquired by a GMB-recognised company. With the staff seamlessly transferred under TUPE regulations, our employment terms remained intact. During a pivotal visit by a GMB organiser, the opportunity arose to become a representative. Encouraged by my colleagues, I stepped into the role of workplace rep, serving as a voice for their concerns and interests. As time unfolded, the vitality of our union shone through branch elections. I had the honor of serving as branch president, a position I held until circumstances led the branch Secretary to transition to the NHS. This marked the moment when I assumed the role of branch secretary, a responsibility I dedicatedly upheld for four years. Last year, I was re-elected as branch Secretary, underscoring the continued faith and support of our union members. Additionally, recognising the importance of representation, I also took on the role of a full-time Accompany rep. This role was vital as it catered to the needs of members working for companies without union recognition or designated workplace representatives.

Bio:
Tamara Beattie – Branch President
I’m Tamara, and I’ve worked in private care for over 8 years. I became a union rep because I was tired of seeing care workers being undervalued and unheard. Now, as Branch President, I do everything I can to support our members — whether that’s through organising, campaigning, or just being someone people can turn to. I’m neurodivergent, a mum, and a strong ally of the LGBTQ+ and trans communities, and I believe our union should be a space where everyone feels safe, seen, and supported. This work means a lot to me, because I know how much it matters.
